St. Rita’s Steven Armbruster Leads Mustangs to State Finals
UPDATE: Former ball boy Steven Armbruster is set to fulfill his dream as he leads the St. Rita Mustangs to the Class 7A state championship game against South Side rival Brother Rice tomorrow at 4 p.m. at Hancock Stadium in Normal. This matchup marks a significant moment for Armbruster, who was just an eighth grader on the sidelines during St. Rita’s last championship appearance in 2021.
Armbruster’s journey from ball boy to quarterback has been defined by resilience and determination. “It’s always been about getting there as a player. That’s always been the biggest goal of mine,” he stated, reflecting on the pivotal moment that shaped his aspirations.
In a remarkable season, the Mustangs turned their fortunes around after a rocky start, going from a 2-4 record to clinching seven consecutive wins. “When we were 2-4 and everyone thought we were done, we used that as fuel just to prove everybody wrong,” said senior receiver Walter Jones.
Armbruster’s performance has been stellar, throwing for 261 yards and three touchdowns in a quarterfinal win against Hersey, followed by 239 yards and four touchdowns in a decisive victory over Batavia. “It always starts up front with the O-line,” Armbruster credited his team, highlighting their pivotal role in his success.
St. Rita’s coach Martin Hopkins praised Armbruster’s growth throughout the season, especially in overcoming injuries and pressure as a senior captain. “He did a great job just settling in and focusing on the now,” Hopkins noted.
With a chance for redemption against Brother Rice, who previously defeated them 28-10 earlier this season, the Mustangs are ready for the challenge. “This is the big one that you dream about, so I’m ready,” Armbruster declared.
The stakes have never been higher, and fans are eagerly anticipating what promises to be an electrifying showdown. As St. Rita (9-4) faces off against Brother Rice (12-1), all eyes will be on the field as Armbruster aims to secure a victory that has long been his dream.
This championship game not only represents a milestone for Armbruster but also a significant moment in St. Rita’s football history, as they seek their first state title in decades. The Mustangs are poised to make history, and the excitement is palpable among players, coaches, and fans alike.
Stay tuned for live updates on the game as Armbruster and the Mustangs strive for glory in the Class 7A state championship.
