Kansas Tops Tennessee 81-76, Hands Vols First Loss of Season
UPDATE: In a stunning turnaround, the No. 17 Tennessee Volunteers suffered their first loss of the season, falling to Kansas 81-76 in the third-place match of the Players Era Championship on December 6, 2023, in Las Vegas. The Jayhawks, now 6-2, showcased a dramatic comeback after trailing by as much as 12 points in the second half.
Kansas’ Melvin Council Jr. and Elmarko Jackson led the charge with 17 points each, while Tre White contributed 14 points before fouling out. Flory Bidunga added 13 points in a crucial performance that propelled Kansas to victory.
Tennessee, previously unbeaten at 7-1, saw Nate Ament lead the team with 20 points. Jaylen Carey and Ja’Kobi Gillespie chipped in with 11 points each, while J.P. Estrella scored 10 points in the loss.

Despite a brief resurgence from Tennessee, which stretched their lead back to six points at 8:21 left, Kansas remained undeterred. Council’s consecutive layups and free throws brought the score to a deadlock at 62-62 with 7:25 remaining.
With less than 3 minutes left, Kansas took control, extending their lead to 75-68. Tennessee fought back, cutting the deficit to 75-73 with just 56 seconds on the clock. However, Bidunga secured the win for the Jayhawks with two free throws and a crucial steal.
