Urgent: Experts Warn of Seasonal Affective Disorder Surge This Winter
UPDATE: Health experts are urgently sounding the alarm about the impending rise in Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) as fall days grow shorter. With the change in seasons, many may soon feel the emotional toll of this condition, particularly in Fresno, California, where mental health professionals are preparing for a surge in cases.
According to Sarah Esparza, a licensed Marriage & Family Therapist with Kaiser Permanente Fresno, the transition into fall can lead to overwhelming feelings and disrupted routines. “The overwhelm, the disruption of schedules, it’s that kind of recipe for struggle and a difficult time,” she explains. Studies show that approximately 5% of adults experience SAD, which typically manifests in late fall or early winter, exacerbating existing mental health issues.
As the days become shorter, access to natural light decreases, removing essential coping mechanisms for those affected. Esparza notes, “Some of the things that they would usually do that really impact their anxiety or their depression are removed because of the time change and the darkness setting in sooner.”
Experts recommend proactive measures to combat SAD. While increasing Vitamin D intake and utilizing light therapy can alleviate symptoms, establishing a structured routine is crucial. Esparza advises, “Trying to still do all the things that they’ve done throughout the rest of the year is vital. Still participating in their movement and their activity, getting out during the day when they can.”
Connection with loved ones also plays a pivotal role in mood enhancement. Esparza states, “The interaction itself can increase those chemicals that relationally feel impactful for us.” Engaging with friends and family can provide the emotional support needed during these challenging months.
For those who find themselves struggling as SAD takes hold, health professionals strongly recommend consulting with a healthcare provider to develop a tailored treatment plan.
