URGENT UPDATE: The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued an alarming warning for Northern Californians about the threat of deadly “sneaker waves” peaking at heights of 13 to 18 feet along the coast. This warning is in effect until at least 10 p.m. Sunday, urging beachgoers to stay vigilant and reconsider their plans.

Sneaker waves are notorious for their unpredictability, striking suddenly during seemingly calm surf conditions. Officials report that these waves occur when an offshore swell and coastal winds align perfectly, creating a dangerous situation for those along the shoreline. Areas at heightened risk include popular spots like Ocean Beach, parts of Santa Cruz County, and coastal towns such as Pacifica.

The NWS emphasizes that sneaker waves can “run significantly farther up the beach” than typical waves, increasing the risk of perilous rip currents, especially near piers, jetties, and inlets. This warning serves as a critical reminder that even the most serene beach days can turn deadly in an instant.

Adding to the danger, a buoy off the coast of San Francisco reports a chilling water temperature of 57 degrees Fahrenheit. According to the University of Sea Kayaking, exposure to these frigid waters can lead to loss of dexterity within 15 minutes and can become life-threatening in as little as one to six hours.

Authorities are advising the public to avoid activities such as surfing and tidepooling today. The risks associated with these sneaker waves and cold water temperatures cannot be overstated. Beachgoers are urged to stay informed and prioritize safety above all.

As conditions develop, the NWS will provide updates. It is crucial for residents and visitors alike to remain alert and heed local advisories. Please share this urgent information with friends and family to ensure everyone stays safe along the Northern California coastline.
