Urgent Health Care Deal Proposed as Costs Surge for Millions
UPDATE: Lawmakers in Washington, D.C., are racing against time to address soaring health care costs that threaten millions of Americans in the new year. With crucial Affordable Care Act credits set to expire at the end of the year, urgency is mounting as the government faces potential fallout from unresolved health care spending issues.
Republican Rep. Kevin Kiley and Democratic Rep. Sam Liccardo have just introduced the “Fix It Act,” a proposal aimed at extending health care subsidies for two years. Kiley emphasizes the critical nature of this initiative, stating it affects 22 million Americans who could see their health care premiums double if no action is taken.
In an exclusive interview, Kiley expressed, “Independent contractors, small business owners, small business employees, and retirees not yet eligible for Medicare will be the ones hit hardest. I’m not willing to just do nothing.” The potential expiration of these subsidies could lead to devastating financial impacts for many families.
Before the holiday break, former President Donald Trump was reportedly considering a plan to address the issue, although he has shown reluctance to support the extension of the credits. Kiley noted that the White House’s previous considerations align closely with the Fix It Act, indicating bipartisan interest.
“We do need to act with a sense of urgency here,” Kiley added. “I’m not claiming in any way that this will solve the health care affordability crisis; that is a much larger conversation.” He highlighted the necessity of proactive measures from Congress to avoid a crisis.
Despite challenges, Kiley reported gaining significant support from fellow Republicans for the proposal. However, House Speaker Mike Johnson has yet to provide a timeline for when the House will vote on the matter. Kiley anticipates that the Senate could take action on some form of an extension by December 12.
“Hopefully, the Speaker will understand this is a priority for the members and a priority for the American people,” Kiley stated, stressing the importance of timely action. The Fix It Act aims to mitigate the looming crisis, and its success could hinge on swift legislative action.
Stay tuned as this developing story unfolds, and watch the full interview with Rep. Kevin Kiley for more insights into the urgency of the health care debate.
