George Clooney Reflects on Losing Iconic Role to Brad Pitt
George Clooney recently shared his thoughts on one of the most significant missed opportunities of his early career: losing the role of J.D. in the 1991 film Thelma & Louise to fellow actor Brad Pitt. In an interview, Clooney expressed that the casting decision had a lasting impact on him, especially as Pitt’s subsequent rise to fame set the stage for his own successful career in Hollywood.
Clooney and Pitt were both emerging actors at the time, vying for the same role that would eventually launch Pitt into stardom. During the interview with ScreenRant, Clooney recounted, “Well, I had a couple of films that I tried to get. It came down to Brad Pitt and me, and both of us were kind of struggling at the time, for Thelma & Louise. Pitt got it, and I was pissed! [Laughs] I didn’t watch the movie for years, and that was a launching pad for Brad. I remember thinking, ‘That f—–…’”
His candid remarks highlight the emotional weight that such pivotal moments carry in an actor’s journey. Clooney admitted that the disappointment lingered for years, particularly as he watched Pitt’s career flourish while he continued to navigate smaller roles throughout the 1990s, a time when both actors were still searching for their big break.
Reflecting on the casting decision years later, Clooney came to appreciate the choice made by the film’s casting directors. “And then I saw it, and I go, ‘Of course, he should have gotten it,’” he noted. He acknowledged that opportunities can slip away but emphasized that they often do so for the right reasons. “People’s careers kind of come and go; they work out when they work out. You can’t look back and go, ‘S—, I should have done that one.’”
Building Successful Careers
Today, both Clooney and Pitt are celebrated figures in the film industry, with extensive catalogs of work. Clooney’s career has seen him take on diverse roles and even delve into directing, while Pitt has also established himself as a versatile talent. The two actors notably co-led the Ocean’s franchise, further solidifying their professional relationship and mutual respect in the industry.
Clooney is set to appear in the upcoming film Jay Kelly, a comedy-drama directed by Noah Baumbach, which also stars Adam Sandler. This latest project promises to showcase Clooney’s range as an actor, continuing his legacy of impactful performances.
As Clooney reflects on his past, he acknowledges the twists and turns of Hollywood careers. His openness about the Thelma & Louise casting decision serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of the entertainment industry, where missed opportunities can lead to unexpected paths and eventual success.
