UPDATE: Families planning to rent picnic areas in San Diego, California, will face a $25 price hike starting January 2. This change will affect numerous park-goers looking to enjoy outdoor gatherings in the coming weeks.

The new fee structure will see the cost for a family-sized picnic area soar from $125 to $150. Larger spaces will also be impacted: areas accommodating between 50 and 100 people will rise from $200 to $225, while those that fit 101 to 250 people will jump from $300 to $325. Even bigger spaces, suitable for 251 to 400 people, will now cost $475 to hire, up from $400. This pricing adjustment comes as officials strive to maintain park facilities and address recent complaints about cleanliness.

Local resident Mike Petersen expressed frustration about litter near picnic spots. “It’s important that park users dispose of their litter in the receptacles,” he stated. A city spokesperson echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of accessible trash cans for park cleanliness.

Those who book picnic areas before January 2 will still benefit from current rates, and previous reservations for spring and summer 2026 will not incur the new fees.

In a related trend, visitors to US National Parks, including the iconic Grand Canyon and Yellowstone, will also see increased fees, with an additional $100 cost coming into effect on January 1. International tourist annual passes will rise to $250, while American visitors will only need to pay $80. This policy shift is part of a broader strategy to prioritize American visitors, as reiterated by President Donald Trump.

As families prepare for the upcoming picnic season, this imminent price increase is prompting many to reconsider their plans. Bookings are expected to surge as residents rush to secure picnic sites before the new fees take effect. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story and how it impacts community gatherings across San Diego.
