Red Sox Eye Teoscar Hernández in Potential Trade with Dodgers
The Boston Red Sox are reportedly turning their attention back to outfielder Teoscar Hernández, who could be a key target in a potential trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers. This development comes one year after Hernández initially re-signed with the Dodgers for a three-year, $62 million deal following a successful stint with the team. As the Red Sox look to reshape their roster, questions surrounding their outfield strategy and other significant signings remain at the forefront.
In a report published by Ken Rosenthal, Patrick Mooney, and Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic, trade interest in Hernández has resurfaced as the Dodgers evaluate their options this offseason. Although Hernández’s performance in 2024 was not as strong as his debut season with the Dodgers, he managed to hit five home runs during the playoffs, tying for third in Major League Baseball alongside Shohei Ohtani and Vladimir Guerrero Jr..
Trade Speculation Surrounds Hernández
Rosenthal, while hosting the “Fair Territory” podcast, highlighted the Red Sox as a logical landing spot for Hernández if a trade were to materialize. He noted, “One team that stands out immediately is Boston, which is pretty predominantly left-handed.” The Red Sox are not only looking to bolster their lineup but are also in pursuit of a right-handed bat, particularly if their efforts to re-sign Alex Bregman do not pan out.
The Dodgers view a deal involving Hernández as unlikely, which suggests that any trade discussions may still be in the early stages. Yet, the potential benefits for both teams could drive negotiations forward. Hernández, entering his age-33 season, would likely benefit from more consistent at-bats as a designated hitter. Meanwhile, the Dodgers are looking to improve their defense in right field, particularly with six-time Gold Glove winner Mookie Betts now entrenched as their shortstop.
As the offseason progresses, the Red Sox’s strategy will become clearer. They are actively exploring multiple avenues to enhance their roster. The addition of Hernández could provide a much-needed boost to their batting order, especially if the team is unable to secure Bregman.
In summary, the possibility of a trade involving Teoscar Hernández presents an intriguing opportunity for the Red Sox as they seek to reconfigure their lineup. With divisions in performance and needs between the two teams, the coming weeks could prove pivotal for both franchises as they navigate the complexities of the trade market.
