Cavaliers Hit with $250K Fine for Resting Darius Garland on TV
UPDATE: The NBA has just imposed a hefty $250,000 fine on the Cleveland Cavaliers for violating the league’s player participation policy. This comes after All-Star guard Darius Garland was rested during a nationally televised matchup against the Toronto Raptors on November 24, 2023.
The Cavaliers are facing scrutiny again, as this marks the second fine this season for similar violations. Just days ago, on November 18, the team was penalized $100,000 for resting both Donovan Mitchell and Evan Mobley in a game against the Miami Heat on November 12.
An investigation by the league confirmed that Garland was indeed available to play, having participated in the prior game against the LA Clippers on November 23. However, he did not take the court the following night in Toronto, a game broadcasted on Peacock in the United States and Sportsnet in Canada. As a player classified as a “star” under the policy, Garland’s absence drew significant attention and criticism.
The Raptors capitalized on the Cavaliers’ missing star, extending their winning streak to eight games with a decisive 110-99 victory. The Cavaliers were also without De’Andre Hunter (rest) and Jarrett Allen (sprained finger) for this crucial game.
This developing story raises questions about player management strategies and the league’s enforcement of participation rules, especially as teams navigate the challenges of back-to-back games. Fans and analysts alike are eager to see how the Cavaliers will respond to this latest setback, particularly as they strive to maintain their competitive edge in the Eastern Conference.
Stay tuned for updates as this situation unfolds, and share your thoughts on the Cavaliers’ decision-making regarding player rest and its implications for their season.
