The excitement in the Aurora, Illinois school hallways is palpable as over 56 seniors take on the roles of U.S. Senators and Representatives. Principal Collette House emphasizes the significance of this event, stating it is a “very big deal” for students and families alike. With civics education often diminished in schools, Baker’s initiative aims to combat this trend, fostering a passion for government in young minds. “Kids have become like puppets,” Baker remarked, stressing the need for practical application of knowledge rather than rote memorization.

As the mock Congress unfolded, students faced the challenge of navigating political divides, with roles assigned to reflect diverse viewpoints. For example, James Wellington, a self-described conservative, portrayed liberal icon Bernie Sanders, advocating for educational funding. “I knew Bernie cared a lot about education,” he explained, highlighting the necessity of compromise in legislative success.

Meanwhile, Tessa Sepulveda took on the demanding role of Speaker of the House, dedicating months to preparation. “It’s hard to work together when there are so many different beliefs,” she noted, emphasizing the importance of collaboration in moving legislation forward.
