Urgent Alert: NY Health Commissioner Warns of COVID-19 Surge
New York’s health officials are sounding an urgent alarm as COVID-19 cases surge ahead of the holiday season. Dr. Jim McDonald, commissioner of the New York State Department of Health, has revealed startling statistics: for every one person hospitalized due to flu, there are three attributed to COVID-19.
As of November 26, 2025, vaccination rates for COVID-19 have plummeted by 30% compared to last year, raising significant concerns amid rising hospitalizations. Dr. McDonald stated, “What we’re seeing more of right now in New York state is COVID.” He noted that while flu vaccination rates remain similar to last year at 20%-30% in some upstate counties, the COVID-19 vaccines are lagging considerably at just 6%-10% uptake.
The health commissioner is particularly worried about New Yorkers’ preparedness as they approach the busy holiday season, a time marked by increased gatherings and travel. Dr. McDonald emphasized the heightened risk of illness, stating, “If you get that COVID and flu vaccine, you’re going to be in better shape.”
Adding to the urgency, Dr. Danielle Wales from Albany Med Health System advised that while some supplements may help boost immunity, they do not treat illnesses. “It’s important to know that the supplements don’t actually treat the illness,” she said. She encourages individuals to consult their doctors if they fall ill, especially those with pre-existing medical conditions.
As families prepare for holiday celebrations, the message is clear: vaccination is critical to protecting public health. With close contact during festivities, the potential for spreading both COVID-19 and flu increases significantly. Health officials urge residents to take immediate action by getting vaccinated and prioritizing their health this winter.
The urgent message from New York health officials reflects a growing concern that could impact communities statewide. With the holiday season upon us and COVID-19 cases climbing, residents are advised to stay informed, get vaccinated, and consult health professionals for guidance.
Stay tuned for further updates as this situation develops, and share this vital information with friends and family to help keep everyone safe this holiday season.
