Trump Appoints New Architect for White House Ballroom Project
The White House has announced a significant change in the architectural leadership for the construction of the new ballroom. Shalom Baranes, a seasoned architect known for his work on government buildings, has been appointed to replace James McCrery II as the lead architect for the project. An official confirmation was provided on Thursday, indicating a shift in direction for this high-profile initiative.
According to a statement from White House spokesperson David Ingle, the administration is enthusiastic about Baranes joining the team. “As we begin to transition into the next stage of development on the White House Ballroom, the Administration is excited to share that the highly talented Shalom Baranes has joined the team of experts to carry out President Trump’s vision on building what will be the greatest addition to the White House since the Oval Office,” Ingle said. He emphasized Baranes’ extensive experience, stating that his work has significantly shaped the architectural identity of Washington, D.C. for decades.
Despite the leadership change, McCrery will remain involved as a consultant for the ballroom project. Reports from The Washington Post suggest that differences arose between President Trump and McCrery regarding the design vision, specifically concerning the size of the ballroom. Originally projected at a cost of $200 million, the budget for the project has now escalated to $300 million, with funding expected to come from private donors.
The ballroom, which is anticipated to accommodate approximately 1,000 guests, will serve as a venue for various significant events, including state dinners. The initial plan was to construct the ballroom adjacent to the East Wing, but this area was demolished in October 2023 to make way for the new development.
The decision to appoint Baranes reflects the administration’s commitment to realizing an ambitious vision for the White House. With a focus on enhancing the venue’s prestige, this project aims to create a space that will be a hallmark of presidential events for years to come. As the design phase progresses, the administration expresses confidence in Baranes’ ability to deliver a ballroom that meets the expectations and grandeur associated with such an iconic location.
