Christmas Lights Shine Bright at Mesa LDS Temple for 2023
The holiday season has officially begun at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Temple in Mesa, Arizona, where the annual Christmas lights display is now open to the public. This beloved tradition, which started in 1979, features a stunning array of lights and festive decorations, inviting visitors to experience the holiday spirit.
Over the years, the display has transformed from a simple collection of lights into a substantial showcase. According to Suzette Tyler, Director of the Mesa Arizona Temple Christmas Lights, the centerpiece of the display is a star adorned with approximately 23,000 lights. Additionally, the palm trees bordering the temple’s north side are illuminated with a remarkable 43,200 lights.
Community Involvement and Festivities
The preparation for the display begins as early as September, engaging numerous members of the church community. “It’s divided into 63 areas,” Tyler explained. “Each congregation or stake contributes 10 to 30 people to assist with their designated section. The collaboration creates a vibrant atmosphere on the grounds.”
In addition to the dazzling lights, visitors can enjoy ten thematic displays that highlight the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. Across the street, a visitor center features a unique exhibit showcasing 150 nativities from various cultures around the world. This diversity adds a rich layer of cultural significance to the holiday celebration, making it an inclusive experience for all attendees.
Event Details and Accessibility
The Christmas lights display is open nightly from 17:00 to 22:00 and will run through December 30, 2023. The event is free of charge, making it accessible to everyone who wishes to partake in the festivities.
The Mesa LDS Temple’s Christmas lights are more than just a visual spectacle; they represent a community coming together to celebrate the values of faith, hope, and togetherness during the holiday season. Visitors are encouraged to come and enjoy the beautiful display, which continues to attract both locals and tourists alike.
