María Corina Machado to Attend Nobel Ceremony in Oslo
María Corina Machado, this year’s Nobel Peace Prize laureate, will be present in Oslo on December 10, 2025, to accept her award. The news was confirmed by Kristian Berg Harpviken, the director of Norway’s Nobel Institute, who stated in a text message that he had spoken with Machado the previous night. While he could not disclose further details regarding her travel for security reasons, her attendance marks a significant moment in her ongoing resistance against the regime of President Nicolás Maduro.
Machado, a prominent figure in Venezuela’s opposition, has faced considerable risks due to her activism against Maduro’s rule. Her decision to attend the Nobel ceremony comes with uncertainties, particularly concerning her ability to return to Venezuela after the event. Observers note that her travel could provoke potential repercussions from the Maduro government, which has previously restricted her movements.
Adding to the significance of the event, Javier Milei, the President of Argentina, has expressed his intention to join Machado in Oslo. He shared a message on the platform X, previously known as Twitter, highlighting his support for her during this critical time.
As the Nobel celebrations approach, there are rising tensions surrounding the event due to ongoing military activities near Venezuela by the United States. Concerns have emerged that these developments might intersect with the Nobel festivities, potentially leading to heightened security issues and unintended consequences during and after the ceremony.
Machado is also scheduled to address the media on December 9, a day before the award presentation, further emphasizing her commitment to advocating for peace and democratic values in Venezuela. Her presence at the Nobel event not only underscores her courage but also brings international attention to the challenges facing her homeland.
The Nobel Peace Prize ceremony, set against a backdrop of political strife and conflict, is poised to be a poignant reminder of the ongoing struggle for freedom and justice in Venezuela.
