Walter F. Currie, Beloved Engineer and Business Leader, Passes at 91
Walter F. Currie, a respected engineer and entrepreneur, passed away peacefully on November 3, 2025, at the age of 91. Surrounded by family, he concluded a courageous ten-year battle with cancer. Born on February 11, 1934, in Louisville, Kentucky, Currie was the only son of Floyd and Stella Currie.
Currie’s journey began in his teenage years when he met fellow student Catherine Louise Shelburn at Atherton High School. Their relationship blossomed, leading them to graduate together and pursue studies at the University of Kentucky. Currie enrolled in the College of Engineering, where he joined the Air Force ROTC, became a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity, and earned his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering in 1956.
As a lifelong supporter of the University of Kentucky, Currie remained dedicated to his alma mater, often donning the school’s colors and contributing to various athletic programs. His commitment to education extended beyond his own studies; he encouraged his family to pursue knowledge and understand the intricacies of the world around them.
In 1961, Currie founded Currie Aerospace Associates, an independent sales organization representing national electronics manufacturers. The company began in the spare bedroom of his home in Lake Conway Estates, with Currie serving as the sales engineer and Shelburn acting as secretary. Over the years, the business grew and was eventually renamed Currie, Peak, and Frazier, Inc. At its peak, the company employed 36 people, underscoring Currie’s success and leadership in the industry.
A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Currie took immense pride in his family. He maintained a keen interest in their lives and accomplishments, always ready to offer support and guidance. Currie’s approach to life was grounded in a strong belief in the power of education, and he took joy in sharing his knowledge with those around him.
Currie is survived by his wife, Catherine Currie; his sons, Scott Currie of Mosier, Oregon, and Beau Currie of Windermere, Florida; and his five grandchildren: Trevor Currie of Missoula, Montana, Lucas Currie of Playa Grande, Costa Rica, Charles Summers of New York City, Nathan Currie of Hailey, Idaho, and Amanda Summers of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
A private memorial service will be held at Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville, where Currie’s cremated remains will be interred next to his parents, Floyd and Stella Currie. This resting place, chosen by Colonel George E. Currie in 1894, signifies the legacy of a family deeply rooted in the community.
Walter F. Currie will be remembered as a man of integrity, resilience, and dedication to both his family and his profession. His contributions to the engineering field and his unwavering support for education leave a lasting impact on those who knew him.
