Abandoned Dog Found in Suitcase Recovers at Everett Shelter
An abandoned dog named Binny is recovering at an animal shelter in Everett, Washington, after being discovered tied up inside a suitcase and left in a dumpster. The Everett Police Department (EPD) reported the incident, which was made possible by a bystander’s 911 call that alerted officers to the dog’s plight.
Patrol officers found Binny behind a restaurant on Evergreen Way following reports of an abandoned animal. When officers located her, she was found with a rope around her neck and zipped inside the suitcase. Officer Kargopoltseva transported her to the Everett Animal Shelter, where she began receiving care.
Rescue and Recovery
Upon arrival at the shelter, staff noted that Binny was underweight but has shown significant improvement in the two weeks since her rescue. Leslie Wall, a manager at the shelter, stated, “As she gets more and more healthy and starts feeling better, she’s way more interactive, she’s higher energy.” Despite her traumatic experience, Binny’s resilient spirit has been evident.
During a recent visit to the shelter, Binny exhibited playful behavior, eagerly seeking attention from visitors. Staff members commented on her outgoing nature, highlighting the stark contrast between her previous confinement and her current affectionate demeanor. “Even with everything she’s been through, she’s open to meeting new people,” Wall added.
Animal welfare officials have expressed both shock and concern over the increasing number of similar cases. Local shelters report being at or near capacity, reflecting a broader strain on animal care services in the region. “It’s a miracle she survived,” one shelter leader remarked in a Facebook post.
Legal Implications and Community Support
The EPD is actively investigating the circumstances surrounding Binny’s abandonment. If a suspect is identified, criminal charges may follow, as abandoning or abusing an animal is illegal under Washington state law. Authorities encourage anyone with information about the incident to contact the EPD at 425-407-3999.
Advocates for animal welfare emphasize that Binny’s story highlights a recurring issue: some pet owners, feeling overwhelmed, choose to abandon their animals rather than seek assistance. Wall urges anyone struggling to care for their pets to reach out to local shelters or animal control agencies, which can provide support and accept surrendered animals.
As Binny’s journey continues, she is expected to be available for adoption as early as next week, pending medical clearance. For now, she enjoys her newfound freedom at the shelter, where she greets visitors with enthusiasm and joy, embodying the resilience that has defined her recovery.
Anyone with further information regarding Binny or her abandonment is encouraged to reach out to the Everett Police Department.
