GRANITE QUARRY, NC — The annual Christmas at the Lake event ignited holiday cheer on December 2, 2023, with families flocking to Granite Lake Park for a magical evening. Attendees were treated to the highly anticipated lighting of the festival of trees, marking a significant highlight of the festive season.

The lakeside was alive with energy as festive characters—including the gingerbread man, abominable snowman, and the Grinch—delighted children participating in lawn games and making s’mores. Families eagerly engaged in various activities, making the event a must-see.

In a twist to the holiday festivities, the town launched a house light competition, inviting residents to showcase their festive decorations. Sponsored by Select Realty and Nothing Bundt Cakes, the winner will receive a yard sign and a $100 gift card for additional lights, fostering community spirit and friendly competition.

Attendees also had the chance to contribute to Operation Christmas Spirit, a program designed to support families in need. Granite Quarry Event Coordinator Debbie Loflin-Benge shared, “We get a Christmas list from the family with what the family needs… It’s things you need.” This initiative reflects the heartwarming spirit of giving during the holiday season.

Kids wrote letters to Santa at designated stations, which they could mail or deliver in person, while festive music played in the background, enhancing the joyous atmosphere. The event relied on the dedication of 15 volunteers and staff members, all working tirelessly to ensure a memorable experience for everyone.

Local vendors offered delicious treats, including hot chocolate and candy apples from Happy’s Farm, which also donated character costumes for the event. A cozy firepit, sponsored by Novant Health, provided warmth and the perfect setting for making s’mores.

As anticipation built, crowds gathered at 5:45 p.m. for the grand tree lighting. The shore of the lake glimmered with dozens of illuminated trees, each sponsored by local businesses, churches, and organizations. For the first time, Granite Quarry showcased a magnificent over 10-foot tall tree adorned with white lights, proudly standing out among the others.

After heartfelt words from Mayor Brittany Barnhardt, the array of trees lit up almost simultaneously, drawing cheers from the crowd. Attendees eagerly snapped photos, capturing the enchanting scene of twinkling lights reflecting on the water.

This year’s Christmas at the Lake not only celebrated the holiday spirit but also emphasized community involvement and support for those in need. With the festival of trees shining brightly, Granite Quarry’s event is sure to be remembered as a highlight of the festive season, spreading joy and warmth to all who attended.

As the holiday season continues, Granite Quarry invites everyone to join in the spirit of giving and community, fostering connections that enrich lives during this special time of year.
