Elias Mokwana Reflects on Career Challenges and Revival Journey
Bafana Bafana winger Elias Mokwana has shared insights into a challenging period in his career that nearly compromised his aspirations to represent South Africa on the international stage. His recent recall to the national team prompted a reflection on the difficulties he faced, particularly following a high-profile transfer to Tunisian club Esperance.
The transition to Esperance was fraught with challenges, as Mokwana struggled to maintain his form and confidence after the move. “It wasn’t easy at first. As we all know, when I got to Esperance, things didn’t go as I expected,” Mokwana stated. This period of difficulty significantly impacted his prospects with Bafana Bafana, leading him to admit, “I think I did lose some hope at some point.” His candid acknowledgment reveals the mental strain that accompanied his experience abroad.
A Turning Point in Saudi Arabia
Things took a turn for the better when Mokwana secured a loan to Al-Hazem in the Saudi Pro League. This move proved crucial as he formed a strong partnership with coach Jalel Kadri, who played a pivotal role in Mokwana’s resurgence. “… with my coach, I think I had hope. He gave me hope,” Mokwana explained. Kadri’s commitment to his development included additional training sessions, reinforcing Mokwana’s self-belief.
Under Kadri’s mentorship, Mokwana began to rediscover his joy for the game. “But when I made the move to Al-Hazem, I think I started to enjoy myself a little bit better, training well,” he reflected. The encouragement he received from Kadri was instrumental in restoring his confidence, leading to improved performances on the pitch.
Return to National Team
Mokwana’s consistent displays in Saudi Arabia did not go unnoticed, earning him a spot back in the national squad under coach Hugo Broos. His determination and perseverance culminated in his selection for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament. The journey from uncertainty to redemption illustrates Mokwana’s resilient spirit and the importance of supportive mentorship in professional sports.
As he prepares to rejoin Bafana Bafana, Mokwana’s story serves as a testament to overcoming adversity and the powerful impact of belief, both from oneself and from those around them. This renewed chapter in his career not only highlights his personal growth but also emphasizes the significant contributions of coaches like Kadri in shaping the futures of athletes.
