Pelicans Stage Remarkable 25-Point Comeback to Defeat Rockets
In a stunning display of resilience, the New Orleans Pelicans overcame a staggering 25-point deficit to defeat the Houston Rockets 133-128 in overtime on March 14, 2024. This remarkable comeback, tied for the largest in franchise history, showcased a team that refused to succumb to defeat even when all seemed lost.
The atmosphere at the Smoothie King Center was somber at halftime as the Pelicans trailed 67-45. The Rockets, driven by an impressive performance from Kevin Durant, looked dominant. Durant scored 13 points in the first quarter alone, while the Pelicans struggled offensively, missing 20 of 29 shots in the paint. The crowd’s energy dipped, reflecting the Pelicans’ dismal 6-22 record.
Shifting Momentum in the Second Half
Following a lackluster first half, the Pelicans returned to the court with renewed determination. The team began chipping away at the deficit, narrowing it to 99-83 by the end of the third quarter. While the gap remained significant, the Pelicans showcased a new intensity, signaling a potential shift in momentum.
Rookie Derik Queen played a pivotal role, scoring 16 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. His crucial 18-foot jumper ignited an 11-0 run that brought the Pelicans within striking distance at 101-96. This surge marked the moment when belief returned to the team.
Defensive standout Herb Jones was instrumental in the comeback, recording a career-high eight steals. His relentless energy and tenacity not only disrupted the Rockets’ offense but also fueled the Pelicans’ transition to offense. Jones contributed 18 points, proving that defense can be just as impactful as scoring.
Clutch Performances Seal the Victory
As the game reached its climax, Saddiq Bey emerged as a key player. After a quiet first half, he exploded for 21 of his season-high 29 points after the break. With just 31 seconds remaining in regulation, Bey’s finger roll tied the game at 117, sending the crowd into a frenzy and forcing overtime.
In the extra period, the Pelicans seized control. Jordan Poole added to the excitement, calmly sinking two free throws with 12 seconds left, giving New Orleans a 131-128 lead. Houston’s final attempts to equalize fell short, as sophomore Reed Sheppard missed two three-point attempts. Bey secured the rebound and added two more free throws, solidifying the victory.
For the Rockets, the loss marked a significant disappointment. Alperen Sengun posted an impressive 28 points, 11 rebounds, and 8 assists, but his missed free throws late in regulation proved costly. Durant finished with 32 points, yet the team could not withstand the Pelicans’ surge in the second half.
This victory is more than just a statistic for the Pelicans. After starting the season with a disheartening 3-22 record, they have now achieved three consecutive wins. As the team prepares to host the Indiana Pacers on March 16, they hope to maintain this newfound momentum. The thrilling atmosphere of the Smoothie King Center suggests that fans are ready to rally behind a team that has shown it can rise from adversity.
