Holiday Spirit Shines with Unique Tree Display at Baptist Anderson
The festive spirit is alive at the Baptist Anderson Regional Medical Center in Meridian, where an impressive display of 26 uniquely decorated Christmas trees is capturing the attention of visitors. Each tree, standing at three feet tall, is adorned in a theme inspired by popular holiday songs, showcasing the creativity and festive cheer of the hospital’s various departments.
This year’s initiative, spearheaded by Dr. Troy Dukes, director of pastoral care, is part of an interdepartmental competition to determine which team could create the most imaginative tree. The concept, borrowed from a Baptist hospital in Jackson, has resonated widely, bringing together staff and visitors alike.
The trees are currently displayed in the first-floor lobby, strategically located near the parking garage, where their colorful decorations brighten the area. Each department was assigned a different song, from “Let it Snow” to “Little Drummer Boy,” and the results reflect the diverse talents of the hospital staff.
One tree, representing the song “Feliz Navidad,” bursts with vibrant decorations including festive hats and fans, evoking a lively fiesta atmosphere. Another tree, themed around “Blue Christmas,” features cheerful images of a young Elvis Presley, adding a nostalgic touch.
A particularly creative contribution came from the transportation department, which coordinated its decorations to the tune of “Hark the Herald Angels Sing.” This tree includes photographs of Harold Brassfield, a staff member known for his exceptional singing talent, further enhancing the hospital’s welcoming ambiance.
One of the most humorous displays is the “12 Days of Christmas” tree, which cleverly incorporates images of security guards performing dance moves, alongside witty modified lyrics: “Four Code Calls, Three Security Monitors, Two Walkie Talkies, and a Badge in a Secure Tree.” It also features framed parking violation notices, all set against a backdrop of shiny red and green.
The response from the public has been overwhelmingly positive. A volunteer near the display remarked on the joy it brings to visitors, stating, “A lot of people come through, and they come back. It’s very creative.” Dr. Dukes emphasized the importance of such uplifting initiatives in a healthcare environment, saying, “This is a place of great struggle and trauma for people. Any bit of light and healing we can bring in, we try to do it.”
The display is set to remain in place through the first week of January 2026, providing an opportunity for both patients and visitors to enjoy the festive atmosphere.
In comparison, a visit to Ochsner Rush Medical Center, located just a block away, revealed a more modest tree display. While a couple of trees were present, they did not match the scale or creativity of the Baptist Anderson exhibit. However, the spirit of the season was still alive, as a receptionist was heard joyfully singing “Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” inviting a sense of warmth and hospitality.
The vibrant and artistic tree display at Baptist Anderson Regional Medical Center not only serves as a festive decoration but also as a reminder of the community’s resilience and the spirit of care that defines the institution.
