The Century football team concluded its regular season with a hard-fought victory over Winona, securing a 28-20 win on October 25, 2023. This marked a significant turnaround for a team that finished the previous season without a win, as they celebrated their second victory of the season at Paul Giel Field.

After a challenging last year, the Panthers demonstrated resilience and determination. Century had faced Winona in their last game for the previous three seasons, but this time, they managed to hold off a late comeback attempt by the Winhawks. Century’s head coach, Jon Vik, expressed pride in his players, stating, “I’m really proud of these kids for the fact that they have stuck it out.”

With junior quarterback Nate Long sidelined due to a concussion, Century’s offense relied on key performances from other players. Senior Miles Tesch shone brightly, rushing for 67 yards and scoring one touchdown on just five carries. Tesch’s touchdown came on the very first play of Century’s opening drive, a stunning 60-yard run that set the tone for the game.

The Winhawks struck first after Century fumbled a punt return, allowing Winona to take possession at the Panthers’ 19-yard line. Quarterback Brady Lundgren capitalized on the opportunity, scoring a touchdown to give Winona an early 6-0 lead. Century quickly answered back with a touchdown from Max Elliott, who rushed for 3 yards and completed a two-point conversion pass to junior Malakai Tankhamvang, putting Century ahead 14-6 in the second quarter.

Winona did not back down, responding with a rushing touchdown from Brady Wardwell, evening the score at 14-14 with just over five minutes left in the half. The Panthers regained the lead before halftime when backup quarterback Cade Goergen connected with Tesch for a touchdown, bringing the halftime score to 21-14.

In the second half, Century’s defense played a crucial role, with Tesch and senior receiver Owin Gerber each intercepting passes. Winona managed to score again with a 28-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Kyle Keller to Ethan Pruka, narrowing Century’s lead to 28-20 after a blocked extra point attempt.

Elliott then sealed the game with another touchdown run, making it 28-20 with 7:35 remaining on the clock. Winona’s final opportunity to turn the game around ended when they turned the ball over on downs with just 22 seconds left, allowing Century to celebrate their hard-earned victory.

Coach Vik acknowledged the progress his team has made since last season but emphasized that the players are eager for more victories. “None of these kids are satisfied with just having two wins. And so that’s on their mind to go out and get more,” he remarked.

With this win, Century improves its record to 2-6 overall and prepares to face Owatonna in the Section 1, Class 5A quarterfinals next Tuesday. This upcoming rematch will be significant for the Panthers, who strive to build on their recent successes and continue their journey in the postseason.
