Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff Apologizes for National Guard Remarks

UPDATE: Salesforce Inc. (NYSE:CRM) CEO Marc Benioff has issued an urgent public apology just hours ago, retracting his earlier support for President Donald Trump‘s controversial proposal to deploy the National Guard in San Francisco. In a post on X, Benioff clarified that after listening to city leaders and residents, he no longer believes military intervention is necessary for public safety.
In his statement, Benioff expressed regret over the concern his previous remarks caused. “Having listened closely to my fellow San Franciscans and our local officials—and after the largest and safest Dreamforce in our history—I do not believe the National Guard is needed to address safety in San Francisco,” he stated. His initial comments were made out of “an abundance of caution” surrounding safety issues, particularly during a recent event.
Benioff’s original remarks, made during an interview with the New York Times on October 10, ignited significant backlash throughout Silicon Valley. He had suggested that the city’s police shortage, with 1,000 officers currently needed, was driving Salesforce to hire 200 additional security personnel to protect its downtown event.
The fallout from his comments has been swift. Notably, angel investor Ron Conway resigned from the board of the Salesforce Foundation in protest, as reported by the New York Times. Additionally, prominent philanthropist Laurene Powell Jobs criticized Benioff in a Wall Street Journal op-ed, accusing him of leveraging his wealth for political gain.
The urgent nature of this situation extends beyond Benioff’s remarks. President Trump had proposed sending troops to San Francisco amid criticisms of Democratic leadership regarding the city’s safety. While his administration has deployed troops to cities like Los Angeles and Washington, D.C., legal challenges have hindered similar actions in Chicago and Portland.
Benioff’s apology underscores the complex dynamics of addressing public safety in urban areas. As discussions continue, it remains crucial for local leaders and residents to engage in meaningful dialogue about the best solutions for their communities.
As this story develops, all eyes will be on Salesforce and how this incident will impact its leadership and policies moving forward. Stay tuned for more updates on this evolving situation.
