Governor Newsom Calls Out Trump After Live Shell Incident

However, after the shell detonated, Newsom fired back, demanding an apology from both Vance and Trump. “You accused the Governor of overreacting when he closed a portion of the freeway to protect the public,” his office posted on X. “And now we learn … live ordinance detonated early, striking a vehicle on a closed portion of the highway during the event. Without a doubt, an apology is owed — to not just Californians, but all Americans.”

The California Highway Patrol confirmed that metal shrapnel did hit one of its vehicles, with CHP Border Division Chief Tony Coronado describing the situation as “unusual and concerning.” “It is highly uncommon for any live-fire or explosive training activity to occur over an active freeway,” Coronado stated. He emphasized that public safety remains their top priority.

The First Marine Expeditionary Force, responsible for the demonstration, stated it is currently investigating the incident. They assured the public that rigorous rehearsals had been conducted to ensure safety, claiming, “Marines fire artillery on Camp Pendleton nearly every week.”
