LA City Honors Tony Cabrera for Contributions During Heritage Month
Los Angeles celebrated Filipino American Heritage Month with a special recognition for local journalist Tony Cabrera, who was honored by the Los Angeles City Council. The ceremony took place on October 10, 2023, during a city council meeting dedicated to acknowledging the contributions of the Filipino American community.
Councilmember Ysabel Jurado, the first Filipino American to serve on the city council, presented the award to Cabrera. The recognition was a joint effort by the city and the Los Angeles Filipino Association of City Employees, which highlighted Cabrera’s significant impact on the local Filipino community through his work as a morning anchor at ABC7 Eyewitness News.
Cabrera’s career at ABC7 spans several roles, including weathercaster, reporter, and entertainment correspondent. His versatility and commitment to community journalism have made him a trusted figure among viewers. Before joining ABC7, he worked at various television stations across the country, including those in Fresno, Santa Barbara, Tucson, Arizona, and Toledo, Ohio.
Born and raised in San Jose, California, Cabrera pursued his passion for journalism by earning a degree in broadcast journalism from the University of Southern California. In addition to his journalistic credentials, he is a certified meteorologist through the Broadcast and Operational Meteorology Program at Mississippi State University. This combination of expertise allows Cabrera to deliver comprehensive news coverage, particularly in weather reporting.
The recognition of Cabrera during Filipino American Heritage Month not only underscores his individual achievements but also reflects the broader contributions of Filipino Americans to Los Angeles and beyond. The city council’s celebration aims to foster a deeper appreciation for the rich cultural tapestry that Filipino Americans add to the community.
Cabrera’s commitment to journalism and his active engagement with the Filipino American community have made a lasting impact. His recognition serves as an inspiration to many aspiring journalists and highlights the importance of representation in media. Congratulations to Tony Cabrera on this well-deserved honor.
