UPDATE: The Chicago Fire have advanced to the MLS playoffs following a decisive 3-1 victory over Orlando City on October 25, 2023, at SeatGeek Stadium. This victory marks the Fire’s first playoff appearance since 2017, under the leadership of first-year head coach Gregg Berhalter, the former U.S. men’s national team coach.

In an electrifying second half, Hugo Cuypers netted two goals, while Brian Gutiérrez contributed another to secure the win. With this performance, the Fire now prepare to face the Supporters’ Shield-winning Philadelphia Union in a best-of-three first-round playoff series.

The match kicked into high gear shortly after halftime, with Gutiérrez striking first in the 48th minute. He skillfully settled a cross from Jonathan Dean and sent a powerful shot into the net, giving the Fire a quick 1-0 lead. Cuypers followed suit just nine minutes later, capitalizing on a misplay by Orlando’s goalkeeper Pedro Gallese to redirect a clearance attempt for a 2-0 advantage.

Cuypers wasn’t done yet; in the 68th minute, he scored again with a well-placed shot off a pass from Philip Zinckernagel, extending the Fire’s lead to 3-0. Orlando managed a late consolation goal by Tyrese Spicer in the 89th minute, but it was too little, too late.

Orlando City, who had advanced past the first round in the last two playoffs, faced a disappointing exit, having only secured one win in their last eight matches. Their struggle to maintain momentum ultimately cost them in this crucial wild-card round.

As excitement builds for the Fire’s next challenge against the Union, fans are eager to see how they can build on this momentum. The upcoming matches will be pivotal for Chicago’s aspirations in the playoffs, and supporters are hopeful that this new chapter under Berhalter will lead to further success.

Stay tuned for more updates as the playoffs continue to unfold!
