El Reno Honors Fallen Sgt. Thomas Duran Amid Community Support
UPDATE: The city of El Reno, Oklahoma is uniting in heartfelt remembrance of Sgt. Thomas Duran, who tragically lost his life in the line of duty on October 17, 2023. The community is rallying to honor his legacy and support his family during this devastating time.
Just hours ago, family, friends, and law enforcement officials from across the state gathered at the OU Medical Center for an emotional honor walk. This poignant event recognized Sgt. Duran’s final wish to become an organ donor, showcasing his selfless commitment to giving back even after his passing. Chief Ken Brown expressed the profound loss felt by the police department, stating, “We took that call knowing it’s one of yours, one of your own, and it’s difficult. I mean, imagine even a loss or injury to a family member.”
In a powerful tribute, dozens of flowers were placed on a police car outside the El Reno Police Station, symbolizing the community’s grief and solidarity. The local Elks Lodge is also stepping up, hosting a fundraising dinner to support the Duran family. Tonight, attendees can enjoy a $10 spaghetti dinner, with all proceeds going directly to the family. “100% of everything that comes in tonight, including tips, is going right back to the family,” said Jared Holden of the Elks Lodge.
“This has been a beautiful coming together as well to support this event,” Holden added. “You don’t just have people from our community come in and support it; you have people from other communities. It shows that this community is strong and there’s nothing going to hold us down.”
The outpouring of support is a testament to the impact Sgt. Duran had on El Reno and beyond. As tributes continue to pour in, the city stands united, reflecting on the bravery and dedication of their fallen hero. Community members are encouraged to participate in the ongoing fundraising efforts, as the healing process begins for the Duran family.
This developing story highlights the resilience and compassion of the El Reno community during a time of tragedy. Stay tuned for more updates as the community continues to honor Sgt. Duran’s memory and support his loved ones.
