Graham Gano Returns as Giants’ Kicker After McAtamney Struggles
The New York Giants have officially reinstated Graham Gano as their starting kicker for the upcoming Week 8 matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles. This decision comes after a challenging performance from Jude McAtamney, who struggled in the previous game, missing two extra points in a narrow loss to the Denver Broncos. Gano, who has recovered from injury, is expected to stabilize the kicking game for the Giants as they aim to improve their performance this season.
Gano’s return is a significant boost for the Giants, as his experience and reliability have been sorely missed. In the game against Denver, the Giants lost by just one point, a defeat that could have been avoided had Gano been available. McAtamney’s difficulties in that game prompted the team to make a change, allowing Gano to reclaim his role.
Despite his struggles, the Giants have retained McAtamney on their practice squad. As a player in the International Pathway Program, he does not count against the 16-man limit for the squad, providing the team with additional flexibility. This decision reflects the organization’s commitment to developing international talent, while also ensuring that they have backup options available.
In addition to McAtamney, the Giants have another kicker on their practice squad: Younghoe Koo, a former kicker for the Atlanta Falcons. Koo was signed in September 2023 but has yet to be elevated to the active roster. This suggests that the Giants are currently favoring McAtamney over Koo, potentially limiting Koo’s opportunities to contribute this season.
With Gano back in the lineup, the Giants hope to solidify their special teams and improve their scoring efficiency as they face the Eagles. If Gano remains healthy throughout the remainder of the season, he is likely to maintain his position as the team’s primary kicker.
As the NFL season progresses, the performance of the Giants and their kickers will be closely monitored. The team is eager to bounce back from recent setbacks and capitalize on Gano’s experience to enhance their chances of success in the competitive league.
