NYCFC Prepares for MLS Playoffs Amid Scoring Drought
URGENT UPDATE: New York City FC is gearing up for the MLS Cup playoffs, facing Charlotte FC this Tuesday, as the team grapples with a concerning scoring drought. With just four goals in their last four matches, including a mere one goal in their last three games, pressure is mounting on key players Alonso Martínez and Hannes Wolf to deliver.
Martínez and Wolf combined for an impressive 28 goals during the regular season, contributing to NYCFC’s total of 56 goals. Their performance will be critical in the best-of-three first-round series against Charlotte FC, which kicks off at 7 PM ET.
Despite the recent struggles, Martínez, who netted 17 goals this season, remains optimistic. “It’s just been the last few games that I haven’t been able to score,” he stated, emphasizing that he doesn’t feel additional pressure. “Before that, I went on a streak of scoring in five matches. Not too worried about that, the goals will come,” he assured.
Head coach Pascal Jansen echoed Martínez’s sentiments, stating, “You always will have one or two top targets who make your goals in every team. Our team is no different.” He is looking for contributions from the rest of the squad, particularly in set pieces, as the team seeks to break their scoring slump.
In a twist of fate, NYCFC will face Charlotte without their star player, Wilfried Zaha, who is suspended after receiving two yellow cards in the season’s final match. This opens up an opportunity for NYCFC to secure their first road victory against Charlotte.
Concerns linger regarding Wolf, who missed practice due to “physical issues” but was confirmed to travel with the team to Charlotte. As the playoffs approach, the stakes couldn’t be higher, and NYCFC is determined to turn their fortunes around.
With kickoff just hours away, fans and analysts alike are eager to see if NYCFC can rise to the occasion and overcome their scoring challenges. The first goal will be crucial, as it could set the tone for the entire match.
