NBA Urgently Reviews Betting Practices Amid Scandal Developments

UPDATE: The NBA is taking immediate action to address vulnerabilities in its betting practices following a shocking scandal involving player prop bets. Sources confirm that the league is actively reviewing which types of bets are most susceptible to manipulation and considering stricter wagering limits.
The urgency of these discussions comes after allegations surfaced that veteran guard Terry Rozier conspired with gamblers to manipulate game outcomes related to his performance statistics. The indictment claims Rozier informed a friend to remove himself early from a March 2023 game, resulting in bettors wagering $257,700 on the under for his statistics. This alarming situation has prompted the NBA to act swiftly and decisively.
The NBA identified specific bets—namely missed free throws, fouls, and turnovers—as particularly vulnerable to manipulation. Consequently, the league has requested its partner sportsbooks, including FanDuel and DraftKings, to refrain from offering such wagers. Both platforms have complied, with FanDuel stating they had not offered these bets in previous seasons, while DraftKings confirmed they would not provide in-game betting on free throws before games.
Authorities report that these discussions are ongoing and focus on determining appropriate betting limits for player prop bets, which are often lower than those for game point spreads. An NBA spokesperson emphasized the league’s commitment to maintaining integrity:
“Prop bets on individual player performance can raise heightened integrity concerns and warrant additional scrutiny.”
As the situation develops, it is crucial for bettors to understand the implications. The scandal has revealed a significant increase in betting activity surrounding Rozier’s statistics, enough to prompt sportsbooks to remove these bets just hours before the game. This incident is not isolated; it follows another disturbing case involving Jontay Porter, who was banned from the league for manipulating his performance to benefit gamblers.
The NBA’s proactive measures come as player prop bets grow increasingly popular, especially in the NBA, where they represent a substantial portion of wagers. However, these actions may inadvertently push bettors towards illegal and unregulated platforms, according to the Sports Betting Alliance (SBA). Jeremy Kudon, SBA president, warns:
“That creates a dangerous blind spot for regulators and leagues, preventing them from effectively identifying and addressing threats to game integrity.”
As the league prepares for the 2024-25 season, it has requested that sportsbooks avoid offering bets on players on two-way or ten-day contracts to mitigate risks. The ongoing dialogue between the NBA and its sportsbook partners is essential to ensure the integrity of the game and protect bettors.
Fans and bettors alike are urged to stay informed as the NBA continues to evaluate its betting offerings and implement measures to safeguard against manipulation. The situation remains fluid, and further developments are expected in the coming weeks as the league works closely with sportsbooks to navigate these challenges. Share this urgent news to keep others informed about the unfolding scandal and its potential impact on the NBA betting landscape.
