LGBTQ+ Candidates Seek Historic Wins in Local Elections Today

Across the United States, voters are heading to the polls today to decide on a range of local elections that could reshape political representation for LGBTQ+ individuals. A total of 264 candidates endorsed by the LGBTQ+ Victory Fund are vying for positions in 37 states, with 171 candidates appearing on ballots in this year’s elections. This marks a record number of endorsements for a non-federal election year, surpassing the previous count of 253 in 2023.

As the nation reflects on a year marked by significant political developments, many are focusing on races such as the Virginia gubernatorial contest and the New York City mayoral election as indicators of public sentiment. Additionally, numerous local elections are poised to reveal community responses to ongoing challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community, particularly transgender individuals.

Evan Low, president and CEO of the LGBTQ+ Victory Fund, emphasized the importance of every election, stating, “There’s no off-year for equality. Every race matters. Every ballot counts.” He highlighted the growing presence of LGBTQ+ leaders stepping up to advocate for their communities and rights.

Key Candidates to Watch

Several noteworthy candidates are making headlines as they seek to make history in their respective races.

Jolanda Jones, a Texas Democrat, is running for the U.S. House of Representatives in a special election for Houston’s 18th Congressional District. If elected, Jones would become the first Black out lesbian woman in Congress. She expressed her motivation for running, saying, “I was inspired to run because my constituents asked me to.” Jones also voiced her frustration over the still-relevant nature of her potential milestone, remarking, “It makes no damn sense that we’re still having firsts.”

In Pennsylvania, Erica Deuso is campaigning for the office of Mayor in Downingtown. A bi transgender candidate and community advocate, Deuso has served on various boards, including the Pennsylvania Equality Project and PFLAG West Chester. Her campaign focuses on fostering a spirit of inclusion and collaboration in her community.

Meanwhile, Jasmine Preston, a trans woman candidate, is running for mayor of Columbia Borough, Pennsylvania. With a background in safety management and human resources, Preston has previously chaired the Zoning Hearing Board and is known for her commitment to community upliftment.

Another candidate, Joshua Cole, seeks to maintain Democratic control in the Virginia House of Delegates. Raised in Fredericksburg, Cole is a bi Black local pastor who has been active in advocating for investments in education and healthcare.

In Texas, Alejandra Salina aims to become the first LGBTQ+ Latine woman elected to the Houston City Council. Salina, a Democratic attorney, serves on the board of the Greater Houston LGBTQ+ Chamber of Commerce.

Additionally, former New Jersey Governor Jim McGreevey is running for mayor of Jersey City, where he would become the first out gay mayor if elected. His campaign focuses on issues such as property taxes, community policing, and education.

Lastly, Luanne Peterpaul, who made history as the first queer woman elected to the New Jersey Assembly in 2023, is seeking to retain her seat in the general assembly. Peterpaul, a managing partner at Perpaul Law, previously worked as a prosecutor and municipal judge.

As these candidates represent diverse backgrounds and experiences, their elections could signal a shift in political dynamics, highlighting the importance of representation in local governance.
