Dr. John Ray Taitano of Guam has been re-elected as the president of the Cancer Council of the Pacific Islands (CCPI). This organization plays a vital role in addressing health disparities across the Pacific Island jurisdictions by collaborating with various health institutions, including the Pacific Islands Health Officers Association, the John Burns School of Medicine, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Dr. Taitano has a long history of leadership within the council, having served multiple terms over the past decade. His position as president is appointed by the director of Guam’s Department of Public Health and Social Services (DPHSS), where he also acts as the clinical representative.

New Leadership Roles within the CCPI

During the recent elections for the CCPI, significant positions were filled alongside Dr. Taitano. Martina Reichhardt from the Federated States of Micronesia, representing Yap State, was elected as the vice-president. Additionally, former Guam senator Louise Borja from DPHSS has taken on the role of secretary/treasurer.

The CCPI is structured with two directors from each Pacific Island jurisdiction. These directors are appointed by health directors and ministers from various territories, including Guam, American Samoa, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, Palau, the Marshall Islands, and the Federated States of Micronesia.

This leadership transition within the CCPI underscores a commitment to improving cancer care and health outcomes across the Pacific Islands. The collaborative efforts of these leaders aim to close the gap in healthcare access and services, addressing the unique challenges faced by these communities.

Dr. Taitano’s re-election signals a continued focus on enhancing public health initiatives and fostering partnerships aimed at improving cancer prevention and treatment in the region. The work of the CCPI remains crucial as it strives to provide equitable healthcare solutions tailored to the needs of Pacific Island residents.
