Local Sorority Empowers Seniors with Technology Training
In an effort to bridge the digital divide, the members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Lambda Xi Omega Chapter, are providing essential technology training for seniors in Thomasville. The initiative, aimed at assisting individuals aged 60 and older, consists of six sessions designed to enhance their comfort and proficiency with modern devices, including smartphones, tablets, and computers.
The program commenced with its first session on September 6, 2025, at the Thomas County Public Library, where participants were introduced to fundamental computer terminology and basic operations. Following this, the second session on October 4, 2025, focused on helping seniors navigate the Internet and explore digital entertainment options. The third session, which took place on November 1, 2025, aimed to improve participants’ smartphone skills, providing practical tips and tricks to maximize their device usage.
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority recognized the growing challenges many seniors face in an increasingly digital world. With many older adults feeling overwhelmed by technology, this program seeks to empower them with the skills necessary to utilize their devices effectively.
Upcoming Sessions to Continue Support
After a short holiday break in December, the remaining sessions will resume on the first Saturdays of January, February, and March 2026. Each session runs from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the Flipper Room at the library. These classes are free and open to all seniors aged 60 and older, emphasizing inclusivity and community support.
Individuals interested in attending the sessions are encouraged to register in advance to ensure adequate materials are prepared. Interested participants can contact the sorority via phone at 229-200-1255 or by emailing [email protected].
This initiative not only provides valuable skills but also fosters a sense of community among participants, helping to alleviate feelings of isolation that can accompany aging in a technology-driven society. By offering practical guidance in a supportive environment, the Lambda Xi Omega Chapter is making a significant impact on the lives of local seniors.
