Surgical Oncologists Explore Creativity Through Glassblowing Workshop
On November 1, 2025, surgical oncologists from Ochsner Hospital participated in a unique glassblowing workshop at the New Orleans Glassworks Studio. Under the guidance of skilled artisans, the medical professionals engaged in the intricate art of glassblowing, creating their own glass cups while building teamwork and fostering creativity.
The event provided an opportunity for the oncologists to step outside their usual medical environment and explore a different form of artistry. As they heated glass and shaped their creations, the surgeons found a refreshing way to channel their focus and precision, qualities that are essential in their surgical practices.
Dr. Katrina Wade, one of the participating oncologists, expressed enthusiasm about the workshop. “It’s fascinating to see how the skills we use in surgery, like hand-eye coordination and attention to detail, translate into something so creative,” she stated.
This initiative aligns with a broader trend in healthcare, where professionals seek innovative ways to relieve stress and enhance teamwork through artistic endeavors. The fusion of art and medicine has gained traction in recent years, with various programs aiming to promote wellness among healthcare workers.
The workshop at New Orleans Glassworks Studio allowed participants to not only learn a new skill but also to bond with colleagues outside of the clinical setting. As they collaborated on their glass projects, attendees shared experiences from their surgical careers, fostering a sense of camaraderie.
According to Sophia Germer of The Times-Picayune, such creative workshops are increasingly popular among medical professionals who often face high-stress situations. Engaging in artistic activities can serve as an effective outlet for stress relief and can contribute to improved job satisfaction.
As the oncologists manipulated molten glass, they reflected on the parallels between their art and their medical professions. Both require patience, skill, and a commitment to excellence. The glassblowing experience provided a refreshing break from the demanding nature of their work, reminding them of the importance of creativity in all aspects of life.
In recent years, initiatives like this have gained recognition for their positive impact on mental health and team dynamics within healthcare settings. As the event concluded, participants left with tangible reminders of their creativity, as well as valuable memories from an enlightening day of artistry and collaboration.
The combination of medicine and art not only enriches the lives of healthcare professionals but also enhances the quality of care they provide to patients. As more healthcare institutions adopt similar programs, the hope is to cultivate a culture that values creativity alongside clinical excellence.
