Local Elections Shape Future of Catawba County Communities
The recent local elections in Catawba County have resulted in significant changes for the communities of Hickory and Newton. On November 3, 2025, voters took to the polls to elect new council members and reelect key officials, marking a pivotal moment in the region’s political landscape.
In Hickory, Zach Dula emerged victorious over Jesse Zagaroli to secure a seat on the City Council. Dula’s win represents a shift in local governance, as he aims to address various community concerns and enhance civic engagement. Meanwhile, Mayor Hank Guess successfully defended his position, further solidifying his leadership within the city.
In Newton, the “Change Ain’t Polite” candidates achieved notable success, winning three out of nine available seats on the City Council. This diverse slate of candidates reflects the electorate’s desire for fresh perspectives and innovative solutions to ongoing challenges. The strong showing underscores the importance of community representation in local decision-making.
The Newton-Conover community also celebrated the achievements of Alexa Gerard, a sophomore cheerleader with Down syndrome. Gerard has made a significant impact at Bandys High School, where her determination and spirit have inspired both peers and faculty alike. Her story highlights the importance of inclusivity and recognition of diverse talents within educational institutions.
The local economy is seeing growth as well, illustrated by the opening of the North Hickory Market, which will offer breakfast and lunch to the community. Described as “like a big chef’s table,” the market aims to provide a welcoming atmosphere and a sense of community among residents.
Tragically, the region also faced somber news this week. A four-year-old child died two days after reports of an assault, leading to charges of child abuse against a local man. This incident has raised concerns within the community, prompting discussions on child safety and protection.
In sports, the Hickory High School football team celebrated its third consecutive conference title, while Newton-Conover demonstrated a remarkable turnaround this season. The enthusiasm surrounding local high school sports continues to foster community pride and engagement.
As the dust settles from the recent elections and events unfold in the area, residents of Catawba County remain hopeful for a future marked by positive change and enhanced community spirit. The coming months will be crucial as newly elected officials work to implement their visions for a vibrant and inclusive Catawba County.
