NBC’s ‘Stumble’ Debuts to Mixed Reviews, Critics Express Concern
UPDATE: NBC’s new mockumentary series, Stumble, premiered to mixed reviews as critics question its comedic direction and character development. The show, which debuted on July 15, 2023, attempts to capture the competitive world of college cheerleading but struggles to deliver a coherent narrative.
In the second episode, elite coach Courteney (played by Jenn Lyon) delivers a clichéd pep talk to her squad, stating, “Now, when I look at this team, I see grit, determination, heart.” However, the tone of the series has left viewers confused, as it oscillates between underdeveloped humor and forced sentiment. Critics have noted that while the show is trying hard to connect with its audience, it ultimately feels like a tonal misfire.
The series revolves around Courteney, who has amassed 14 championships and is determined to secure her 15th at the fictional Heådltston State Junior College. After being abruptly fired due to a scandalous video leak, she takes on the challenge of transforming a cheerleading program that had only one member, a narcoleptic named Madonna (Arianna Davis). The lack of depth in character development has not gone unnoticed, with critics pointing out that the squad members appear to be merely caricatures rather than relatable individuals.
The comedic elements have come under fire as well, with several jokes deemed either too obvious or bizarrely random. For instance, a recurring gag about Madonna falling asleep mid-sentence initially elicits laughter but quickly loses its charm through repetition. Critics reveal that the first two episodes fail to establish a comfortable rhythm, leaving the audience unsure whether they should laugh with or at the characters.
Despite its shortcomings, there remains a glimmer of hope for Stumble. Many sitcoms take time to find their footing, and viewers are left wondering if the characters will develop more depth and chemistry as the season progresses. As the show continues, fans will be watching closely to see if the humor sharpens and emotional arcs become more resonant.
As it stands, Stumble is viewed as too harmless to outright dislike, but its disorganized execution leaves much to be desired. With potential for growth, the series has a long way to go before it can confidently claim a spot among successful comedies like Abbott Elementary and Parks & Recreation.
Stay tuned for further updates on Stumble as it navigates its inaugural season, and see if it can turn criticism into comedic gold.
