According to the latest insights from industry leaders, adjusting the BIOS settings to enable Multicore Enhancement (MCE) on Intel processors and Precision Boost Overdrive (PBO) on AMD systems can unleash the full potential of your CPU. This is particularly crucial for users engaged in resource-intensive tasks such as gaming, video editing, and machine learning.
These settings can be toggled on both AMD and Intel-based PCs, with MCE found in the BIOS CPU settings on Intel rigs and PBO available for AMD machines. Puget Systems has conducted extensive testing, revealing that enabling MCE can boost multicore performance by up to 20% while pushing CPU temperatures significantly higher.
In benchmark tests, disabling MCE on the Intel Core i9 13900K resulted in a performance drop of approximately 10-20% in demanding applications like Cinebench and Unreal Engine, alongside a temperature decrease of 30-40°C. This indicates that users must ensure adequate cooling solutions to handle the increased heat output.
On the AMD side, enabling PBO allows the CPU to exceed factory-set power limits, effectively functioning as an ‘auto-overclock’ feature. Tests on the Ryzen 9 7950X showed a remarkable drop in temperatures by 30°C during multicore workloads, although this came with about a 10% performance decrease. Notably, results can vary based on the specific Ryzen model and individual hardware.
