URGENT UPDATE: Federal and state health officials are investigating a troubling outbreak of infant botulism linked to baby formula, resulting in a recall by ByHeart Inc. Just announced, 13 infants across 10 U.S. states have been hospitalized after consuming affected products from two specific lots of the company’s Whole Nutrition Infant Formula.

The recalled formula, identified by lot numbers 206VABP/251261P2 and 206VABP/251131P2, has prompted immediate action from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The cases of botulism were reported in Arizona, California, Illinois, Minnesota, New Jersey, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas, and Washington. Fortunately, no deaths have been reported at this time.

Infant botulism can be extremely serious, as it is caused by a bacterium that produces toxins in the large intestine. Symptoms may take weeks to develop, and parents are urged to be vigilant. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advises that if an infant shows signs of poor feeding, loss of head control, difficulty swallowing, or decreased facial expression after consuming the recalled formula, they should seek medical attention immediately.

The affected baby formula is available online and through major retailers, accounting for an estimated 1% of national formula sales, according to CDC estimates. Parents who purchased the recalled formula should check the lot number and take appropriate action, which includes either returning the product or discarding it safely. The CDC emphasizes the importance of cleaning any items or surfaces that may have come into contact with the recalled formula, recommending hot, soapy water or a dishwasher for thorough cleaning.

The FDA is currently investigating the cause of contamination and is assessing whether other products might be affected. A spokesperson for ByHeart did not respond to inquiries regarding the recall.

As this situation develops, parents and caregivers across the nation should remain informed and vigilant. Keep an eye on official announcements for updates on this urgent matter.
