The Gilmore Appoints Kelly W. Waltrip as First Managing Director
The Gilmore, a prominent piano and arts organization based in Kalamazoo, Michigan, has announced the appointment of Kelly W. Waltrip as its inaugural managing director. Waltrip will officially start her role on January 1, 2026, marking a significant milestone for the organization.
A graduate of Western Michigan University, where she completed her music program in 2003, Waltrip returns to The Gilmore, the place where she began her professional journey. Her initial experience with the organization involved a year as an operations assistant, laying the groundwork for her successful career in nonprofit management and arts administration.
Extensive Experience in Arts Administration
Prior to joining The Gilmore, Waltrip served for 11 years as the executive director of the Denver Young Artists Orchestra. During her tenure there, she was pivotal in enhancing the organization’s growth and national recognition through innovative collaborations, commissioning projects, and recording initiatives. Additionally, she played a key role in the partnership between the Colorado Symphony and the Denver Young Artists Orchestra since 2018.
Waltrip’s previous positions include serving as the general manager of the Lexington Philharmonic in Kentucky and spending time with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. Her diverse background equips her with a unique perspective that will be invaluable to The Gilmore’s mission.
Vision for the Future
In her new role, Waltrip will collaborate closely with Pierre van der Westhuizen, executive director of The Gilmore, to help shape the nonprofit’s strategic direction and long-term vision. April Thibeault, spokesperson for The Gilmore, highlighted her responsibilities, which will include oversight across various departments such as development, education, finance, operations, marketing, and public relations.
“I am honored to join The Gilmore at such an exciting time,” Waltrip remarked. “As The Gilmore prepares to present its annual Gilmore Piano Festival, I look forward to working with the team and community to build new audiences and strengthen relationships with our current ones.”
Waltrip’s arrival comes at a crucial moment as The Gilmore prepares for its annual festival, which has transitioned from a biennial event. Her approach is expected to focus on strategic planning and fostering community partnerships within local, regional, and international markets.
Van der Westhuizen expressed enthusiasm about Waltrip joining the team, stating, “We are thrilled to welcome Kelly W. Waltrip to The Gilmore family. She brings a dynamic combination of leadership, creativity, and strategic insight that will expand our impact.” He emphasized that her passion for music and commitment to connecting people with transformative musical experiences will greatly benefit the organization.
As The Gilmore looks forward to a bright future under Waltrip’s leadership, her extensive experience and strong vision are expected to enhance the organization’s role in the arts community.
