Hong Kong Community in California Commemorates ‘Ten Years’ Film
On November 10, the HongKonger Community Center in Northern California hosted an event in partnership with Amnesty International to mark the tenth anniversary of the award-winning film “Ten Years.” The gathering, held in Castro Valley, attracted nearly 100 attendees from across California and included a screening followed by a panel discussion focused on the ongoing struggles of political prisoners in Hong Kong.
Released in 2015, “Ten Years” is an anthology comprising five short films directed by different filmmakers from Hong Kong. Each segment presents a unique vision of the city’s future under increasing authoritarian control from Beijing. At the time of its release, many perceived the film as mere dystopian fiction; however, as the years have passed, the realities faced by Hong Kong citizens have often surpassed the film’s bleakest predictions.
The event served as a platform to raise awareness about the current political climate in Hong Kong and the plight of those imprisoned for their beliefs. Panelists emphasized the need for continued international support for democracy and freedom in the region.
During the discussion, participants shared personal experiences and insights about the impact of political repression on Hong Kong’s society. They called for solidarity from the global community, urging individuals and organizations to remain vigilant and supportive of the fight for human rights in Hong Kong.
The gathering highlighted not only the significance of “Ten Years” as a cultural touchstone but also its enduring relevance in the context of ongoing struggles for democracy. As the event concluded, attendees reflected on the importance of remembering those who have suffered and continue to suffer in the pursuit of freedom, reinforcing their commitment to advocating for change.
This commemoration serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by Hong Kong’s citizens and the responsibility of the international community to stand in solidarity with those fighting for their rights.
