Joe Vandal Statue Unveiled at UI in Historic Celebration
UPDATE: A new bronze statue of the University of Idaho’s beloved mascot, Joe Vandal, was unveiled on November 12, 2025, drawing a spirited crowd outside the P1FCU Kibbie Dome. The 9-foot sculpture, glistening in the afternoon sun, symbolizes decades of pride and unity within the university community.
Fans clad in the school’s signature silver and gold gathered for the momentous occasion, marking the statue’s unveiling as not just a physical addition but a tribute to the rich history of student initiatives at the university. “It looks amazing. The view of the Kibbie Dome in the background definitely adds a lot of momentum,” said Bryant Sitts, vice president of the Associated Students of the University of Idaho.
The unveiling coincides with the 50-year anniversary of the Kibbie Dome, an architectural achievement made possible through student fees. This statue, funded in a similar manner, pays homage to both the Vandal mascot and the leadership that transformed the stadium into a pivotal space for university events.
With a sense of urgency, Sitts highlighted the collaborative spirit that brought the statue to life, stating, “With all of the meetings and trying to figure out the perfect timeline, we were on a time crunch. It stands proud today.” The statue’s sculptor, Gareth Curtis, began his work in February, creating models alongside students and capturing the essence of Joe Vandal, who represents a vibrant campus culture.
The statue is more than just a sculpture; it’s a representation of the collective spirit of the university. “Joe Vandal isn’t just one person. It’s the entire campus,” Sitts emphasized, reinforcing the idea that every student and alumnus contributes to the identity of Joe Vandal.
As attendees took selfies beside the statue, the emotional significance was palpable. Parents and alumni reminisced, while younger fans experienced their mascot in a tangible form for the first time. The unveiling was not solely about celebration but also served as a reminder of the legacy of student leadership that has shaped the University of Idaho.
UI President Scott Green expressed pride in the achievement, stating, “I’m so honored to be here to unveil an awesome landmark for our campus.” He acknowledged the historical context, recalling how former ASUI president Dirk Kempthorne championed the use of student fees to support the Kibbie Dome’s construction. Green noted that the stadium is now a multi-purpose venue, hosting various sports and events.
The event was a powerful reminder of what can be accomplished when students take the lead. Seyi Arogundade, ASUI President, reflected on the statue’s significance, stating it symbolizes the impact of student initiative on campus culture.
As fans exited the Kibbie Dome following Idaho’s match against UC Davis, many paused to capture the moment with the statue, placing hands on its bronze shoulders, smiling, and celebrating their shared identity.
The Joe Vandal statue stands not just as a piece of art but as a beacon of community spirit, fostering pride and connection among current students and alumni alike. This unveiling marks a significant moment in the university’s history, promising to inspire future generations of Vandals.
