UPDATE: Massachusetts residents should brace for cold and blustery conditions on Friday, January 27, 2023, with a significant risk of freezing rain looming over the weekend. The National Weather Service warns that temperatures will hover in the mid-40s across most of the state, while northern and higher-altitude areas may struggle to reach 40 degrees Fahrenheit.

Wind gusts could exacerbate the chill, making it feel even colder than the thermometer indicates. In Boston, cloud cover is expected to increase throughout the day, with a high of 46 degrees and a nighttime low plunging to 29 degrees. Meanwhile, Hyannis will see a high of 45 degrees and a low of 31 degrees.

In Pittsfield, a slight chance of rain and snow showers is anticipated in the afternoon, while highs will only reach 40 degrees, dropping to 22 degrees overnight. Springfield is forecasted for mostly sunny skies with a high of 46 degrees and a low of 25 degrees. Worcester will also enjoy mostly sunny conditions, hitting 43 degrees and a low of 26 degrees.

As temperatures dip into the low to mid-20s overnight, some coastal regions may remain slightly warmer. Saturday will begin with sunshine, but rain is expected to roll in by the afternoon, as forecasters predict precipitation to start by Saturday night and spread eastward.

Officials urge caution for residents in higher terrains, who are at risk for icy conditions as temperatures remain low. Although conditions should not become dangerously icy due to rising overnight temperatures, it is crucial to stay alert. The rain is set to taper off by Sunday morning, but temperatures will initially rise into the 50s before plummeting to the 30s by afternoon. Wind gusts could reach up to 40 mph late in the morning.

Stay tuned for further updates as the situation develops. Residents are encouraged to prepare for rapidly changing conditions and to monitor local forecasts closely.
