Dog Accidentally Shoots Owner in Back During Freak Incident
URGENT UPDATE: A man in Pennsylvania is recovering in the hospital after being accidentally shot in the back by his own dog. The incident occurred on Tuesday at 11:13 PM in the 300 block of State Street, prompting an immediate police investigation.
Authorities from the Shillington Police Department responded to reports of a shooting at the man’s home. The 53-year-old victim, whose identity has not been released, was reportedly cleaning his shotgun and left it on the bed when his dog jumped up, unintentionally pulling the trigger.
Police found the man with a serious wound to his back and quickly transported him to a local hospital for surgery. The condition of the victim is currently unknown, but both local police and emergency responders are emphasizing the importance of firearm safety following this bizarre occurrence.
According to Corporal Michael Schoone from the Shillington Police Department, the investigation is focused on determining whether the dog’s paw triggered the shot or if there was a malfunction with the shotgun itself. A spent shell casing was discovered inside the weapon, leading police to remind gun owners of the critical rules surrounding gun safety.
“The dog’s paw may have gotten caught inside the trigger,” Schoone explained, labeling the incident as a “perfect storm” of unfortunate circumstances. He urged all gun owners to always keep firearms pointed in a safe direction and to keep their fingers off the trigger at all times.
At the time of the shooting, the victim was home alone with his son, who was in a separate room, and two other dogs were also present. The unusual nature of this incident is raising eyebrows and prompting discussions about responsible gun ownership practices.
As the investigation unfolds, police are gathering more information to ensure such accidents do not occur in the future. The Shillington Police Department has been contacted for further comments on this developing story.
