Thanksgiving Travel Surge: Airports, Trains Prepare for Rush
UPDATE: As the Thanksgiving holiday approaches, travelers in Rochester, N.Y. are facing a bustling travel environment, reminiscent of a “Planes, Trains & Automobiles” experience. With government services gradually reopening, the rush at airports, train stations, and rental car companies is intensifying, and officials are urging travelers to prepare.
Reports from Spectrum News 1 highlight a mixed bag of experiences among early travelers. Dominique Brooks, arriving from Atlanta, Georgia, reported a smooth process: “Travel was definitely…fairly easy,” with TSA lines averaging just 10 minutes and baggage claim under two minutes. However, others have noted delays, with Hiral Patel experiencing two-hour setbacks on his flights.
The American Car Rental Association is optimistic about the upcoming holiday traffic. “We are ready for you,” declared Sharky Laguana, emphasizing the car rental industry’s preparedness to accommodate the surge in demand. With gas prices trending downwards, AAA predicts that upstate New York will follow the national pattern, making road travel more appealing.
While airlines seek to stabilize operations, concerns remain about staffing levels among air traffic controllers. “We support getting those traffic controllers staffed as quickly as possible,” Laguana stated, reflecting the industry’s cautious optimism for travel volumes comparable to past years.
Train travel is also gaining traction as an alternative. Amtrak confirms it is operating at full capacity and advises travelers to book early due to high demand leading up to Thanksgiving.
With so many options on the table, travelers are encouraged to remain vigilant and prepare for potential delays and busy terminals. As the holiday approaches, officials and companies are gearing up for what promises to be one of the busiest travel periods in recent memory.
Travelers are reminded to check with their airlines and rental services for the latest updates as they make plans to reunite with family and friends. The holiday spirit is in the air, but so is the need for patience and preparedness. Stay tuned for further updates as the situation unfolds.
