Cameron Boozer Scores 35 Points, Ties Duke Freshman Record
URGENT UPDATE: In a stunning performance, freshman Cameron Boozer scored 35 points for the fourth-ranked Duke Blue Devils in a decisive 100-62 victory over Indiana State on November 3, 2023. This remarkable feat ties him for the second-most points ever scored by a Duke freshman in a single game, right behind Cooper Flagg‘s 42 points last season against Notre Dame.
Boozer’s efficient shooting was evident as he made 13 of 16 field goal attempts and hit both of his three-point shots. Despite a less-than-perfect performance at the free-throw line, going 7-for-11, his overall impact was undeniable. “I don’t know how you could be more efficient,” said Duke coach Jon Scheyer.
“Just his approach, he’s such a competitor,” Scheyer added.
This stellar outing places Boozer in elite company, sharing the 35-point mark with Duke legends Zion Williamson and Jared McCain. His scoring surpassed that of notable Blue Devils like Marvin Bagley III and JJ Redick in their freshman seasons. As Boozer reflects, “When I’m focusing on the right things like defense and rebounding, the other things naturally happen.”
In addition to his scoring prowess, Boozer also led with 12 rebounds and 5 assists, demonstrating his versatile skill set. Teammate Caleb Foster praised Boozer’s aggressive playstyle, stating, “He gets it down in the paint, he’s going to attack the rim, it’s hard to stop him.”
With an average of 22.5 points per game, Boozer is quickly becoming a pivotal player for the Blue Devils. Looking ahead, Duke is set to face No. 25 Kansas on November 7, 2023, in a highly anticipated matchup in New York.
As Boozer continues to impress, Coach Scheyer encourages him to be even more aggressive in his scoring: “I just think it speaks to his character. I actually want him to be more aggressive with his scoring.”
This performance not only highlights Boozer’s talent but also raises expectations for the Blue Devils as they progress through the season. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely as Duke prepares for its next challenge.
