Los Gatos Defense Stonewalls St. Francis, Secures 14-7 Playoff Win
UPDATE: In a stunning defensive showdown, the Los Gatos Wildcats halted St. Francis at the goal line not once, but three consecutive times, sealing a dramatic 14-7 victory in the opening round of the Central Coast Section Division I playoffs on July 15, 2025.
With time running out at Los Gatos High, the Wildcats’ defense showcased their grit and determination. St. Francis running back Kaimani Keanaaina, who had been a force throughout the second half, was denied on three crucial plays, each time falling short of the end zone. The resolve of the Wildcats was evident as they rallied to stop him just inches away.
In a pivotal moment, star offensive lineman Garrett Bertsch made his first defensive play of the season, joining forces with a swarm of Los Gatos linemen and linebackers. Together, they successfully stonewalled Keanaaina on his final attempt, clinching the victory and ending the Lancers’ season.
“I just loved playing with that group of guys at the end, and I wanted to come up big for them,”
Bertsch said, reflecting on the team’s effort. “It was a group effort.” The Wildcats demonstrated their commitment to teamwork and resilience in a high-pressure situation.
Los Gatos head coach Mark Krail praised his team’s unity, stating, “We preach family and we preach brotherhood, and it’s in moments like that where that rises to the top. This is a smallish town, and these guys grow up together, and here we are. They get another week together, which is so great.”
The Wildcats had prepared for such a scenario, practicing a heavy short-yardage formation in anticipation of St. Francis’ powerful offensive strategy. Despite Keanaaina’s impressive performance earlier in the game, Los Gatos displayed unwavering determination when it mattered most.
This thrilling victory not only advances Los Gatos in the playoffs but reinforces the deep bonds among the players, who have worked tirelessly together throughout the season. Fans and supporters are eager to see how the Wildcats will build on this momentum as they continue their playoff quest.
