Dalton Airport Manager Andrew Wiersma Receives Statewide Honor
Andrew Wiersma, the manager of the Dalton Municipal Airport, has been recognized for his significant contributions to aviation in Georgia. He received the prestigious James Stogner Award from the Georgia Airport Association (GAA) during its annual conference in October 2025. The award honors an airport professional who exemplifies exceptional support for the state’s airports and related sectors.
Wiersma’s recognition comes as a result of his collaboration with the Georgia State Legislature, where he played a key role in securing funding for crucial infrastructure improvements across the state. Although he was unable to attend the conference to accept the award in person, Wiersma was honored at the Dalton Airport Authority’s monthly meeting. Danny Morgan, Chairman of the Dalton Airport Authority, accepted the award on his behalf.
In reflecting on his achievement, Wiersma expressed gratitude for the nomination, which came from Greg Kelly, the airport director at Savannah International Airport. Wiersma noted, “I was blown away by the nomination… He actually knew (James) Stogner personally, so for him to nominate me, that really, really meant a lot to me.” He acknowledged the significance of the award, typically given to individuals nearing the end of their careers, stating that receiving it at this stage of his professional journey is particularly meaningful.
Leadership and Advocacy in Aviation
In addition to overseeing operations at Dalton Municipal Airport, Wiersma has actively engaged with the GAA. He served as the organization’s president during 2022 and 2023 and held the position of legislative chairman for three years. His leadership has been pivotal in advocating for airport funding, resulting in the highest levels of state appropriations for airport aid in the history of the GAA.
Wiersma emphasized the impact of these funds, saying, “That’s really helped airports across the state in the last several years with being able to find a lot of infrastructure renewal projects.” His efforts have contributed to the modernization and enhancement of airport facilities, benefiting travelers and communities throughout Georgia.
The James Stogner Award is named in honor of the late James Stogner, who served as the deputy general manager of the Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta for over 20 years. Stogner’s legacy continues to inspire airport professionals across the state, and Wiersma’s recognition stands as a testament to ongoing commitment to improving Georgia’s aviation landscape.
As the aviation industry continues to evolve, the contributions of leaders like Andrew Wiersma play a crucial role in shaping the future of air travel in Georgia and beyond.
