Glenn Close Backs Kim Kardashian Amid ‘All’s Fair’ Criticism
Glenn Close has come to the defense of Kim Kardashian and their new series, “All’s Fair,” in the face of harsh criticism from various media outlets. The series, which premiered on Hulu on November 4, 2023, has drawn negative reviews, with some critics labeling it as “existentially terrible.”
In an interview with The Guardian, Close expressed her strong belief in the series, stating, “I swear to God, I’ve seen all nine episodes and it’s pretty f**king good.” The acclaimed actress, aged 78, praised the show for its engaging content, describing it as “juicy and outrageous at times and touching.” Close also highlighted Kardashian’s dedication to her family and education, mentioning her pursuit of a law degree during filming. “She was very, very conscientious with her kids,” Close remarked, noting that Kardashian successfully completed her degree and keeps it “in her back pocket” for future use.
The series, created by Ryan Murphy, features an ensemble cast including Close, Kardashian, Niecy Nash, Naomi Watts, and Sarah Paulson. Despite the star-studded lineup, the show faced immediate backlash. Lucy Mangan, a TV critic for The Guardian, gave “All’s Fair” a rare zero-star review, stating, “I did not know it was still possible to make television this bad.” She criticized the series for lacking the basic standards of television production, calling it “terrible” and “fascinatingly, incomprehensibly, existentially terrible.”
This sentiment was echoed by Ben Dowell, deputy TV editor at The Times, who described it as potentially “the worst TV drama ever.” He criticized the show for failing to deliver on its premise of portraying strong female lawyers, stating that it instead became a “tacky and revolting monument to greed, vanity, and avarice.” Dowell also questioned Kardashian’s acting abilities, likening her performance unfavorably to historical figures known for their lack of democratic values.
Despite the critical reviews, a source close to Kardashian shared with Us Weekly that she remains optimistic about the show. “Kim is so happy with how much the fans love the show and it’s still No. 1 on Hulu three days in,” the source stated. Kardashian reportedly joked that the negative press may actually be increasing viewership, demonstrating her resilience in the face of criticism.
The synopsis of “All’s Fair” suggests a narrative centered around women navigating high-stakes legal battles while dealing with personal relationships. It claims to depict how these characters “don’t just play the game — they change it.”
As the series continues to attract attention, Close’s enthusiastic endorsement stands in stark contrast to the critical reception. Whether the show will gain traction among audiences despite early reviews remains to be seen, but Close’s support underscores a belief in the project and its potential impact.
