Jeremiyah Love Sparks Heisman Hopes as Notre Dame Eyes Playoffs
URGENT UPDATE: Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love is making headlines as he positions himself for a potential Heisman Trophy win, while also leading the ninth-ranked Irish (8-2) in their quest for a second consecutive College Football Playoff berth. With just two games left in the regular season, every performance counts!
Love, who has emerged as a key player for Notre Dame, is currently ranked third in the FBS with an average of 113.5 rushing yards per game, accumulating 17 total touchdowns and 1,409 scrimmage yards. He stands out as the only player in the top three for each of these categories.
“I try to keep everything just straight as possible,” Love stated. His team-first mentality shines through as he emphasizes the importance of team performance over individual accolades. “This is a team sport, and the performances are not really just because of me,” he added.
Since the season’s rocky start, Love has been instrumental in Notre Dame’s eight-game winning streak, bringing them back into playoff discussions. His standout moments include becoming the first player in Notre Dame history to achieve multiple touchdown runs of over 90 yards, with a stunning 98-yard run against Indiana and a 94-yard run against Boston College.
Coach Marcus Freeman praises Love’s versatility: “He’s as special of a football player as I’ve been around. He is as dangerous of an offensive weapon that I’ve probably been around.” This sentiment reflects the growing buzz around Love’s Heisman candidacy.
However, as the December 13 Heisman presentation approaches, Love faces stiff competition from quarterbacks like Fernando Mendoza of Indiana and Julian Sayin of Ohio State, who are currently favored to win. The last running backs to clinch the Heisman were Alabama’s Derrick Henry in 2015 and Mark Ingram II in 2009.
Despite the challenges, Love’s mindset remains clear: “I’m the type of guy that wants to break off a touchdown run every single play.” His determination to seize opportunities on the field is evident, especially as he aims for a playoff spot with upcoming games against struggling Syracuse (3-7) and Stanford.
With the NFL draft on the horizon, many speculate about Love’s future, but he is committed to finishing the season strong. “Winning a game is way more important than that individual award,” Freeman noted, reflecting Love’s focus on team goals.
As fans gear up for the crucial matchups, all eyes will be on Love and the Irish. A strong finish could secure Notre Dame not only a playoff berth but also potentially elevate Love’s Heisman chances, making this an exhilarating time for college football fans!
