URGENT UPDATE: The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is urging drivers to prepare for hazardous conditions as nearly 82 million Americans are set to travel for Thanksgiving. With the holiday rush upon us, thick fog and heavy traffic are expected to create dangerous driving conditions across the region.

A Dense Fog Advisory has been issued by the National Weather Service Hanford, effective from Midnight Saturday and lasting into the late morning. Visibility in the Valley could drop to as low as 200 feet, making it crucial for motorists to remain vigilant and cautious.

CHP Officer Anthony Daulton emphasizes the importance of using low beam headlights in fog, stating, “Do not use high beams when you’re in the fog because that actually makes your visibility worse.” As millions hit the roads, drivers must prepare for potential gridlock.

Local mechanics echo these warnings, advising that proper vehicle maintenance is essential before long trips. Brandy Ames, Technician Manager at Sunnyside Auto Repair, stresses the necessity of visiting a trusted auto shop every 5,000 miles to avoid major breakdowns during holiday travel. “If you wait too long to maintain your car, your holiday travel could turn into a nightmare,” Ames warns.

In addition to vehicle checks, motorists should ensure their tires, brakes, and fluid levels are in optimal condition. “Especially your coolant and oil,” Ames adds, “because if those are low, you overheat—it could be catastrophic.”

If emergencies arise on the highway, remember that the CHP is just a call away. “If you’re on the highway and you dial 9-1-1, it will go to the CHP dispatch,” Officer Daulton assures travelers.

As you prepare for your journey, keep safety in mind: “Say a prayer, hit the road, drive safe, don’t rush,” Ames advises. With the holiday travel season underway, these precautions are vital to ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all.
