Bay Area High School Football Playoffs: Week 13 Thrills Unfold
UPDATE: The Bay Area high school football playoffs delivered dramatic and thrilling action in Week 13, with several teams securing their spots in championship games. The excitement unfolded across multiple venues, showcasing top talent and fierce competition.
In a stunning showdown, the CCS Open Division No. 1 Archbishop Riordan decisively defeated No. 2 Serra with a score of 33-13 at San Jose City College. This victory marks a significant milestone for Riordan, ending their long journey to the top of the Central Coast Section.
Meanwhile, in the NCS Open Division, No. 1 De La Salle captured its 33rd consecutive NCS title by edging out No. 2 Pittsburg 24-17. Despite Pittsburg’s strong offensive showing and impressive fourth-down conversions, De La Salle’s defense held firm. North Carolina commit Jaden Jefferson made a major impact, rushing for 106 yards and a touchdown.
In the CCS Division II finals, No. 1 St. Ignatius dominated No. 4 Menlo School, winning 42-6. Quarterback Caedon Afsharipour shined with five touchdown passes, leading the Wildcats to their second consecutive title game appearance.
Further down the bracket, No. 2 Monte Vista triumphed over No. 3 California 35-21 in the NCS Division II semi-finals. Senior quarterback Ian Ondricek contributed with two touchdowns, ensuring his team advances to the finals against Clayton Valley.
The NCS Division III match saw No. 3 El Cerrito take down No. 2 Rancho Cotate 26-9, showcasing a strong comeback season for the Gauchos. They will look to compete for the championship after a tumultuous previous year marred by ineligible players.
In another nail-biter, No. 1 Branham edged No. 5 Half Moon Bay in the CCS Division IV semi-finals, winning 56-45. The Bruins’ Michael Murphy ignited the game with three rushing touchdowns, propelling Branham to its third CCS title game in history.
The NCS Division IV semifinal featured No. 1 Hayward routing No. 4 Granada 41-18. Standouts Maurice Hall and Lamont McDonald led the charge, with McDonald amassing 190 rushing yards and two touchdowns, demonstrating Hayward’s offensive prowess.
Miramonte’s defense shone brightly as they secured a 20-0 victory over No. 7 Redwood in the NCS Division III semi-finals. This win propels Miramonte to their chance at an 11th section championship next week.
In the NCS Division V, No. 3 Bishop O’Dowd overwhelmed No. 2 St. Helena 49-26, with standout performances from multiple players, including a pick-six by OC Lehner. O’Dowd will face Fortuna or St. Bernard’s for the title next week.
Lastly, No. 2 Piedmont achieved a historic victory over No. 3 Willits 28-10, moving them closer to an NCS championship less than five years after nearly losing their football program. Coach Jordan Seiden expressed immense pride in the team’s journey, stating, “We’re making history!!”
